The journalism nonprofit won gold in 2022 and 2023 for its Wisconsin law enforcement investigations.

The Milwaukee Press Club nominated The Badger Project’s managing editor Peter Cameron for a 2023 Excellence in Journalism award in the Online division in the category of Best Investigative Story or Series. The nomination is for a series of stories on active law enforcement officers in Wisconsin who had joined the radical Oath Keepers organization in the past.
The press club announced the finalists on Tuesday.
Founded in 1885, the Milwaukee Press Club is the oldest continuously operating press club in North America. The press club will announce the actual award placement — gold, silver and bronze — Friday, May 3 at the club’s Gridiron Awards event at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee.
The Badger Project is a nonpartisan, citizen-supported journalism nonprofit in Wisconsin that investigates government, law enforcement and related matters. Its stories run in newspapers and news organizations across the state.
This is The Badger Project’s third straight nomination from the Milwaukee Press Club. Last year, Cameron tied for gold at the 2022 Excellence in Journalism awards for his story on the record-low number of law enforcement officers in Wisconsin.
In 2022, Cameron received gold in the online category of Best Public Service Story or Series for a collaboration between The Badger Project and Wisconsin Watch. The story found that nearly 200 officers who had been fired or forced out from previous law enforcement jobs had been rehired in law enforcement jobs in Wisconsin.
