The Milwaukee Press Club nominated The Badger Project for a total of four Excellence in Journalism awards.
Managing editor Peter Cameron was nominated in the Online categories of Best Investigative Story or Series, Best Personal Profile and Best Public Service Story or Series. Reporter Annie Pulley was nominated for the more competitive Writing category, which includes newspapers and online news orgs, for Best Investigative Story or Series.
Cameron’s nods in both the Best Investigative and Best Public Service are for his reporting on the Waushara County Sheriff, who pocketed over $20k in K9 funds after quitting the mandatory trainings with the dog. Cameron’s recognition for Best Personal Profile is about state Rep. Karen DeSanto, who served as a professional clown with the Ringling Brothers Circus before becoming a state legislator.

Founded in 1885, the Milwaukee Press Club is the oldest continuously operating press club in North America. The club will announce the first, second and third prize winners at a ceremony on Friday, May 8 at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee.
Last year, Cameron won gold in the contest’s online category for Best Public Service Story or Series. His series focused on Wisconsin’s wandering officers, active police and jailers who were fired or forced out of previous jobs in Wisconsin law enforcement.
Pulley is nominated this year for her investigations on police misconduct in Wisconsin. This is her first nomination since joining The Badger Project last year, and the fifth straight year the nonprofit has been recognized by the Milwaukee Press Club’s journalism contest.
The Badger Project is an independent, reader-supported journalism nonprofit in Wisconsin that investigates politics, law enforcement and related matters. Its stories have run in about 150 newspapers and other news organizations across the state.
