A Portage County corrections officer resigned days after he was arrested under suspicion of assaulting his brother with a thermos during an argument in July.

Todd Domres, the 46-year-old former jail officer, now faces charges of substantial battery, a felony, and criminal damage to property, a misdemeanor.

He quit his job at the jail on July 31, according to Portage County Human Resources. He worked for the county for nearly four years, and his salary when he quit was about $55,000.

Prior to his resignation, he was placed on “non-disciplinary administrative leave pending investigation for off-duty conduct,” Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas told The Badger Project.

His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 8.

Domres’ attorney Eric Sheets declined to comment.

The brother, Nathan Domres, was not named in the police report, but it did reference his criminal record, which includes open cases for violating a temporary restraining order, bail jumping and OWI (5th or 6th offense), according to online court records. Nathan Domres told investigators Todd Domres had been letting him stay at his house.

Nathan Domres told police they started arguing and that Todd Domres told him to get his stuff and leave. He was upset with his brother for his “poor quality of work and lack of help around the house and began attacking him,” the report states.

Nathan Domres told investigators that Todd Domres swung at him and that he swung back in self-defense, at least once hitting him in the jaw. Todd Domres then hit him in the head and back with a Yeti thermos, leading to a large cut on his forehead, Nathan Domres told law enforcement.

Todd Domres then locked his brother out of the house, so Nathan Domres went to the neighbor’s, who called the police. The report says he was covered in blood when police met him next door.

The Portage County Sheriff’s Office originally responded to the 911 call, but officers for the Stevens Point Police Department took over to avoid a conflict of interest as Todd Domres worked in the county jail.
